*THIS CHART IS ONLY A PORTION (TOP 30) OF A TOP 50 CHART.
HENCE songs are not deemed to have fallen off the charts UNTIL they are
OUTSIDE/BELOW the top 50 and NOT the top 30 broadcasted on air. This IS
reflected in the year end 'jamz' and explains partially why songs peaking
significantly lower than others may still finish ahead of them on the
year-end charts.

Katy Perry's 'Teenage Dream' Dethrones Eminem on Hot 100

by Silvio Pietroluongo, N.Y. | September 08, 2010 12:53 EDT

Katy Perry posts back-to-back No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100, as "Teenage Dream" is set to top the chart when it's released in full tomorrow morning (Sept. 9).

The last female artist to post successive No. 1 singles on the chart was Lady Gaga, who took her first two entries, "Just Dance" and "Poker Face," to the summit in the first half of 2009.

Perry spent six weeks at No. 1 with her last radio single "California Gurls" earlier this summer, accumulating enough time in the upper reaches of the chart to lead the Summer Songs tally for most of the season. The final ranking of Top Summer Songs will also be announced tomorrow. On this week's Hot 100, "California Gurls" dips 7-10.

"Teenage Dream" makes its surge to No. 1 thanks in part to a copping a second straight Airplay Gainer award, topping 100 million listener impressions for the first time with a 19% audience gain (7-5 on Radio Songs), according to Nielsen BDS. The track holds at No. 1 for a second week on Digital Songs with 221,000 (down 15%), according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Perry supplants Eminem, who was also enjoying a back-to-back No. 1 run on the Hot 100. "Love the Way You Lie," featuring Rihanna, led for the past seven weeks (1-2), while his last single "Not Afraid" topped the chart for a week in May.

Elsewhere in the top 10, Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" holds at No. 3, Bruno Mars' "Just the Way You Are" jumps 6-4 and "I Like It" by Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull slips 4-5.

Usher's "DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love," featuring Pitbull, is pushed down 5-6, Taylor Swift's "Mine" moves 9-7 and "Take It Off" by Ke$ha rises 10-8.

Nelly returns to the Hot 100 top 10 for the first time in more than four years as "Just a Dream" climbs 13-9. The rapper was last in the upper tier when "Grillz," featuring Paul Wall, Ali & Gipp, topped the list for two weeks in January 2006.

Cee Lo Green makes the chart's largest leap as "F**k You (Forget You)" soars 96-33 with Digital Gainer honors. On the Digital Songs chart, the track moves 69-19 with 59,000 downloads (up 180%).

Also making a notable Hot 100 jump is "Like a G6" by Far*East Movement featuring Cataracts & Dev (41-21). The song improves 25-12 on Digital Songs (75,000, up 54%), while airplay impressions increase by 49% to 19.8 million.

The chart's top debut is George Strait's "The Breath You Take," which comes in at a modest No. 95. The list's other two debuts are fellow Country Music Association Award nominees Miranda Lambert and Brad Paisley, who arrive with "Only Prettier" (No. 96) and "Anything Like Me" (No. 100), respectively. The 44th Annual CMA Awards will be handed out Nov. 10 on ABC.

Katy Perry Tops Songs of the Summer 2010 Chart

by Gary Trust, N.Y. | September 09, 2010 11:40 EDT

A song that evokes imagery of palm trees, bikinis and sun-kissed beaches fittingly earns top honors on Billboard's Songs of the Summer 2010 survey, as Katy Perry's "California Gurls," featuring Snoop Dogg, crowns the ranking.

The chart encapsulates the most popular songs based on actual performance on the Billboard Hot 100 from the chart dated June 12, 2010, through this week's chart dated Sept. 18. The Memorial Day through Labor Day tracking period encompasses sales activity as measured by Nielsen SoundScan, radio airplay according to Nielsen BDS and streaming data from AOL and Yahoo!

LISTEN TO THE TOP SONGS OF THE SUMMER 2010

SUMMER MUSIC CENTRAL

"California Gurls" rules the list largely on the strength of a six-week command of the Hot 100 in June and July. The song bests the runner-up, Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie," featuring Rihanna. Despite the latter title's longer stay at No. 1 on the Hot 100 (seven weeks), the track did not debut on the chart until July 10. Eminem is the only artist with two tracks on the Songs of the Summer 2010 tally, as "Not Afraid" claims the anchor spot.

Perry collects her second Songs of the Summer chart champion, following her debut Hot 100 hit, "I Kissed a Girl," in 2008. Perry is just the second artist with two top placements as a lead act in the last 25 years. Mariah Carey won the derby in 1990 with "Vision of Love" and 2005 with "We Belong Together." Jay-Z has sat atop two Songs of the Summer charts as a featured artist, on Beyoncé's "Crazy in Love" (2003) and Rihanna's "Umbrella" (2007).

Photos: Katy Perry's 21 Most Outrageous Fashions

Katy Perry is the only artist to rank on the last three Songs of the Summer countdowns. In addition to leading the list this year and in 2008, she placed at No. 10 last year with "Waking Up in Vegas."

B.o.B's "Airplanes," featuring Hayley Williams, ranks as the third-biggest song of the 2010 summer season, followed by Usher's "OMG," featuring will.i.am., at No. 4. The berth is Usher's first since he boasted the top two titles on the Songs of the Summer 2004 chart: "Confessions Part II" (No. 1) and "Burn" (No. 2). "OMG" banked the last of its four weeks atop the Hot 100 the first frame (June 12) of the Songs of the Summer 2010 tracking period.

Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" ranks at No. 5 on Billboard's Songs of the Summer 2010 recap, followed by Travie McCoy's "Billionaire," featuring Bruno Mars, at No. 6, Mike Posner's "Cooler Than Me" (No. 7), Enrique Iglesias' "I Like It," featuring Pitbull (No. 8), and Drake's "Find Your Love" (No. 9). Drake earned the No. 4 song of last summer with his debut smash, "Best I Ever Had."

Cruz's single that preceded "Dynamite," "Break Your Heart," featuring Ludacris, was an early contender for inclusion on the Songs of the Summer 2010 survey but did make the final tally, as the song spent 12 of its 16 weeks in the Hot 100's top 10 prior to the June 12 Hot 100. Other songs that inked strong showings after Memorial Day but did not sustain enough chart domination to rank among the summer's top 10 tracks include Ke$ha's "Your Love Is My Drug" and Lady Gaga's "Alejandro."

"California Gurls" is the only song to have ranked in the Hot 100's top 10 throughout the Songs of the Summer 2010 15-week survey span. The song debuted on the Hot 100 at No. 2 the week of May 29 and rose to No. 1 three weeks later. Despite the unofficial end of summer signified by Labor Day Weekend, the seasonal anthem remains in the top 10 this week, dipping 7-10.

Nelly Regains Cool with Taylor Swift's Help

by Mariel Concepcion, N.Y. | September 06, 2010 12:00 EDT

Kevin Mazur/WireImage

He's a Grammy Award-winning, multiplatinum hip-hop star who's scored a host of top 10 hits, collaborated with heavy hitters from T.I. to Tim McGraw, owns a label and a successful clothing line and is celebrating his 10th anniversary in music.

But for rapper Nelly's teenage daughter, the biggest validation that her father is still "cool" came only last week-from Taylor Swift. "I'm so in love with that new Nelly song," the country phenom tweeted about Nelly's latest single, "Just a Dream," produced by Jim Jonsin and Rico Love.

"My daughter was like, 'OMG!' " the 36-year-old father of two says about his daughter's shock at Swift's recognition. "I'm only cool to her because I know Chris Brown and Bow Wow, and now Taylor tweeted about me."

Apparently, Swift isn't the only one enamored with the track. "Just a Dream"-one of two lead singles from Nelly's upcoming "5.0" album from Derrty/Universal Motown (Nov. 16)-debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 8 on Hot Digital Songs, marking his first top 10 hit since "Grillz" topped the Hot 100 in 2006. Released concurrently with club track "Tippin' in Da Club," the midtempo, guitar-driven "Dream" is No. 7 on Hot Digital Songs and No. 13 on the Hot 100.

"When I did the song, I knew I had something; I loved the strings in it," the St. Louis-raised rapper says. "As an artist, you get those feelings, like when I did 'Dilemma' [with Kelly Rowland] and 'Over and Over' [with McGraw]. Me, Jim and Rico . . . we just felt it."

Jonsin points to the "super contagious melodies" and Nelly's strong fan base as key reasons behind the breakout success of "Dream." And Love agrees. "It just shows that people are still in love with great songs minus the bells and whistles," he says.

But Nelly's fan base hasn't always been as impressed with his work. His 2008 album, "Brass Knuckles," has only sold 223,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In fact, "Dream"-about missing a former love-has already outpaced sales of "Brass," moving 252,000 downloads, according to SoundScan.

While Nelly was disappointed by the "Brass" outcome, he used it as motivation for his upcoming sixth album. "Like the 5.0 Mustang, it's going to be a classic," the rapper says. "This album is a lot more melodic than most of my previous albums. It has the power, energy and diversity that my fans have allowed me to [draw from] over the years, including pop, rhythmic, urban and even country."

In addition to "Dream" and "Club," the album includes "She So Fly." Featuring T.I., who also produced, the song is about having a second opportunity to impress someone you desire. "1000 Stacks" is another club track featuring Sean "Diddy" Combs and the late Notorious B.I.G. Other guests include Rowland, Baby, Plies, Chris Brown and Nelly's own St. Lunatics crew. The Runners, Polow Da Don, Dutch and Juke Box are among the set's producers.

Aside from "5.0," Nelly hopes to release a St. Lunatics project on the same date and plans to issue the accompanying video to "Dream" in the coming weeks. In between, he's been staging stateside in-stores in support of his Apple Bottoms fashion brand and recently acquired the rights to the Troop clothing line. He also continues to work on his nonprofit organizations, 4Sho4Kids and Jes Us 4 Jackie-the latter inspired by the loss of his sister Jackie to leukemia.

As the countdown to "5.0" begins, Nelly is savoring his return. "I was always told good artists are only one hit away from re-establishing themselves or becoming bigger than they were," he says. "I love the comeback. I love the triumph in it."
