Kelly Clarkson Breaks Record For Hot 100 Jump
Kelly Clarkson
January 29, 2009 12:00 AM ET
Silvio Pietroluongo and Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Kelly Clarkson makes history on this week's Billboard Hot 100 with the largest leap to No. 1 in the chart's 50-year history. Her new single, "My Life Would Suck Without You," rockets 97-1 after selling 280,000 digital downloads in its first week of availability.

The song is also faring well at radio, jumping 58-38 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart and 27-18 on the Mainstream Top 40 list.

"My Life" introduces Clarkson's March 17 RCA album "All I Ever Wanted." This is the second time the artist has set the record for largest jump to No. 1. She took her "American Idol" victory song, "A Moment Like This," 52-1 on the chart dated October 5, 2002.

That mark lasted nearly five years until Maroon 5 soared 64-1 with "Makes Me Wonder" in May 2007 and had been broken three more times since, most recently by Britney Spears' "Womanizer" (96-1).

"My Life" is Clarkson's first No. 1 since her debut single, though she has placed six other songs in the top 10 during this time, including the No. 2-peaking "Since U Been Gone" in April 2005.

Elsewhere on the Hot 100, Lady GaGa's "Just Dance" featuring Colby O'Donis slips to No. 2 after three weeks on top. Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" slides 2-3, while Kanye West's "Heartless" is down 3-4 despite being the chart's greatest airplay gainer.

Taylor Swift's "Love Story" holds at No. 5, the All-American Rejects' "Gives You Hell" remains No. 6 and T.I.'s "Live Your Life" featuring Rihanna drops 4-7. The Fray's "You Found Me" jumps 16-8 as the top digital gainer on the Hot 100, thanks to download sales of 145,000. Britney Spears' "Circus" inches up 10-9 and Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" is down 7-10.

The Hot 100's top debut comes from U2's "Get on Your Boots" at No. 37. The track sold 57,000 downloads and garnered enough airplay to debut at No. 8 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart and No. 29 on the Mainstream Rock tally.

On Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, "Single Ladies" is in an 11th week at No. 1. Ciara's "Never Ever" featuring Young Jeezy is the top debut at No. 70; it's the second single from her delayed new album "Fantasy Ride," following "Go Girl" featuring T-Pain, which peaked at No. 26 last October.

Blake Shelton notches his fifth No. 1 on Hot Country Songs with "She Wouldn't Be Gone," which jumps 3-1. Rascal Flatts' "Here Comes Goodbye" is the top debut at No. 29, giving the group its second-highest bow. Its new album, "Unstoppable," is due April 7 from Lyric Street/Hollywood.

Kings Of Leon's "Sex on Fire" begins an eighth week atop the Modern Rock chart, while Shinedown leads Mainstream Rock for a seventh with "Second Chance."

'Now That's What I Call Music!' Heading To TV?

January 30, 2009 11:03 AM ET
Kamau High, N.Y.
"Now That's What I Call Music!," the long-running series of hit-single compilations, is being shopped as a TV show by Simon Fuller and his 19 Entertainment company.

While still in its early stages -- the show doesn't have an official title yet, although it's likely to incorporate some variation of the "Now" brand name --details are beginning to emerge.

Fuller, the mastermind behind "American Idol" and "So You Think You Can Dance," has the exclusive global rights to negotiate a TV deal based on the property. "This show will be nothing like 'American Idol' and definitely won't be a spinoff," he says. "It will be a new take on music programming."

At the center of the show will be the hits themselves, by such acts as Britney Spears, U2 and Jay-Z. "The TV show is designed to take the brand 'Now' and bring it to a broader level," says Bob Mercer, CEO of Now That's What I Call Music, a partnership involving Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and EMI Music. (Warner Music Group has a competing product called "Only Hits.")

"A lot of people are buying 'Now' as their guide to what is happening in the music world over the last few months," Mercer says. "The intent is to take that brand and that trust in that brand and establish it as a TV show with the same elements."

That, he suggests, could mean featuring performances by artists from the compilations, whether through concert footage or in-studio appearances. "We'll probably form our own pop chart so the public can be involved," Mercer adds.
Another element of the show would involve appearances by such veteran acts as the Rolling Stones or Madonna, possibly through interviews, performance footage or in-studio appearances, he says.

The program's final aspect would involve finding the next "Now" artists, Mercer says: "That would be new up-and-coming talent that's either already signed or just as likely not already signed."

The show's Web site will play a critical role in its development, Mercer says, adding that a section of it will be devoted to videos that people upload of themselves trying out for the show.

Although it isn't yet clear which network would air the show, 19 already has a longstanding relationship with Fox, thanks to "Idol" -- still TV's top-rated show, with 25 million viewers watching the Jan. 27 episode -- and strong performer "Dance," which generally attracts about 10 million viewers per episode, according to Nielsen Media Research.

"'Now' is a good, existing example of the music industry working together," Fuller says. "This show will unite the whole music industry and give it one voice."

Additional reporting by Keith Caulfield and Ann Donahue.

Yet Another New Jay-Z Song Leaks Online
Jay-Z
January 28, 2009 12:47 PM ET
Hillary Crosley, N.Y.
There's still no release date for Jay-Z's upcoming album, which is rumored to be titled "Blueprint III," but new songs continue to leak onto the Internet.

"Money Goes" hit the Web yesterday (Jan. 27), becoming the seventh expected "Blueprint" track to arrive early either via the Web or radio. The leaks have continued unabated despite Def Jam's consistent message that there is no "Blueprint III" album on their release schedule.

Jay-Z introduced the Kanye West-produced "Jockin' Jay-Z" last year, followed by "Swagga Like Us" featuring West, Lil Wayne and T.I., DJ Khaled's "Go Hard (remix)" and Jay-Z's own tracks "History" and "Brooklyn Go Hard" featuring Santogold.

The MC also hopped on a remix of Young Jeezy's "My President is Black," which leaked to radio and was performed by the pair at a Jan. 18 show at Club Love during President Barack Obama's inauguration festivities in Washington, D.C.

Def Jam was unavailable for comment at deadline.

Lady GaGa Leads Hot 100 Amid Static Top 5
Lady GaGa
January 22, 2009 10:49 AM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Amid a static top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, Lady GaGa's "Just Dance" featuring Colby O'Donis is No. 1 for a third week after selling 192,000 downloads in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Also staying put at Nos. 2-5 are Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)," Kanye West's "Heartless," T.I.'s "Live Your Life" featuring Rihanna and Taylor Swift's "Love Story."

The All-American Rejects' "Gives You Hell" keeps rising 10-6 after selling 169,000 downloads, while Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" holds at No. 7 and Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" slides 6-8.

Kevin Rudolf's "Let It Rock" featuring Lil Wayne is down 8-9 and Britney Spears' "Circus" inches up 11-10 to round out the top tier.

Eminem's "Crack a Bottle" featuring Dr. Dre and 50 Cent is the top debut at No. 78, marking the rapper's first appearance on the Hot 100 since "You Don't Know" peaked at No. 12 in December 2006. Dr. Dre's absence has been even longer; he last charted as a guest on Eminem's "Encore" in January 2005.

"Single Ladies" begins a 10th week at No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, where T-Pain's "Freeze" featuring Chris Brown is the top debut at No. 64.

On Hot Country Songs, Alan Jackson's "Country Boy" ascends 5-1, tying him with George Strait for the most No. 1s since data from Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems became the source for the chart in January 1990. Each artist has 25 chart-toppers since then; Strait is the chart's all-time leader with 45.

Kings Of Leon's "Sex on Fire" begins a seventh week atop the Modern Rock chart, while Shinedown leads Mainstream Rock for a sixth with "Second Chance."

Hot 100 number-one hits of 2008 (United States)

Singer Katy Perry earned her US first number-one single, "I Kissed a Girl", this year. The single became the 1,000th number-one song of the rock era.

The Billboard Hot 100 is a chart that ranks the best-performing singles of the United States. Published by Billboard magazine, the data are compiled by Nielsen SoundScan based collectively on each single's weekly physical and digital sales, and airplays. In 2008, there were 14 singles that topped the chart,[1] in 52 issues of the magazine.

Rapper Flo Rida's "Low" is the longest-running single in 2008, staying at number one for 10 consecutive weeks, longer than any single had achieved in 2007 since R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles' single "Irreplaceable" charted for 10 straight weeks starting in late 2006.[2][3] "Low" is the best-performing single of 2008 in the United States, ranking number one of the Billboard Top Hot 100 Songs.[4] Other singles in a multiple chart run include Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl", which stayed at the top spot for seven straight weeks,[1] and T.I.'s "Whatever You Like", which topped the chart for seven non-consecutive weeks.[5]

In 2008, seven acts gained each a first US number-one single, namely: Flo Rida, Leona Lewis, Lil Wayne, Coldplay, and Perry, all of whom were lead artists,[6][7][8][9][10] and Young Jeezy and Static Major as featured guests. T.I. earned his first number-one single as lead artist with "Whatever You Like".[11] He also had the most weeks on top with 13, combining his two singles "Whatever You Like" and "Live Your Life", the latter of which charted at number one for six non-consecutive weeks.[1][12] R&B singer Rihanna, who is featured in "Live Your Life", appeared in three number-one singles in 2008, and T.I. in two.

Highlights in the 2008 Billboard Hot 100 issues include pop singer Britney Spears' "Womanizer", which is noted for its record-breaking number-96-to-number-one ascent on the chart. This is the first time Spears scored another number-one single in nearly 10 years.[13] Pop singer Mariah Carey's earned her 18th US number-one single with "Touch My Body", which surpassed late Elvis Presley into possession of the second rank for artists with most number-ones in the rock era.[14][15] Singer Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" earned her the recognition of being the third female British act to have topped the Billboard Hot 100 with a debut single in the entire rock era, which began in 1955.[16] "Bleeding Love", which is nominated for Record of the Year at the 2009 Grammy Awards alongside "Viva la Vida",[17] emerged as 2008's top-selling single in both the United States and the United Kingdom.[18][19] Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" became the 1,000th number-one song of the rock era.[10] Although it occupied seven of summer's thirteen weeks, critics remained divided over which is 2008's Song of the Summer.[20][21][22][23]

How We Chart The Year

Annual Recaps Take The Spotlight As Billboard Tracks Top Artists And Titles Of 2008
See All 400+ Year-End Charts

By Silvio Pietroluongo

Billboard continues an annual holiday tradition by offering a bounty of year-end charts in this Year in Music & Touring report.

Once again the total number of year-end recaps reaches 251 in our print pages, matching our 2007 roundup, while a total of 416 tallies are available at billboard.com and billboard.biz.

Joining the printed lineup this year are airplay rankings for the following song charts: Mainstream Top 40, Mainstream R&B, Rap, Christian AC, Gospel Songs and Smooth Jazz Songs.

Those additions boost the chart-topping honors this year for acts including Rihanna, Lil Wayne, MercyMe, Marvin Sapp and Paul Hardcastle.

Exclusive to billboard.com and billboard.biz are a host of charts, including Top Alternative Albums, Top Hard Rock Albums, Top Blues Albums, Top Bluegrass Albums, Top Reggae Albums, Top DVD Sales, Hot Triple A Songs and Pop 100 Airplay.

As before, each of the year-end music tallies represent aggregated numbers from the pertinent weekly charts that were compiled for each artist, title and music company.

Most of those numbers are based on data from Nielsen Music, with sales of physical and digital product compiled by Nielsen SoundScan, and radio airplay and digital streams measured by Nielsen BDS. The ringtones/ringmasters categories are based on sales tracked by Nielsen RingScan.

The entire Billboard charts department has a hand in compiling the Year in Music lists. At the center of this effort is chart manager Anthony Colombo, who handles special feature recaps throughout the year, with charts production manager Michael Cusson, associate production manager Alex Vitoulis and associate director of charts Raphael George each playing key roles. Box-
score chart manager Bob Allen compiles the Year in Touring charts.

The rankings for BDS- and SoundScan-based music charts reflect airplay or sales during the weeks that titles appeared on the respective lists during the tracking period. This includes activity during unpublished weeks for those lists that print every other week. The 2008 chart year began with last year's Dec. 1 issue and ended with the Nov. 29, 2008, issue, making it one of the rare years when the chart calendar totals 53 weeks.

Sales or airplay registered before or after a title's chart run are not considered in these standings. That detail, and the December-November time period, account for some of the differences between these lists and the calendar-year recaps that are compiled independently by either SoundScan or BDS.

Artist, imprint, label and distributor categories for all genres reflect accumulated chart performance for all titles on the pertinent chart.

The umbrella "label" categories refer to the distributing labels and/or promotion labels listed on our weekly charts. If only one label appears on a chart listing, that company counts as both "imprint" and "label" for that title.

Certain airplay categories-Mainstream Top 40, Rhythmic, Modern Rock, AC, Adult Top 40, Dance, Mainstream R&B, Adult R&B, Rap, Christian AC, Gospel, Mainstream Rock and Contemporary Jazz-are based on accumulated BDS-monitored plays for each week a song appeared on the chart.

Similarly, the Hot 100 Airplay, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, Hot Country Songs and Hot Latin Songs (and the four related Latin-format airplay charts) are determined by adding up the total number of gross impressions, as determined by BDS by cross-referencing exact time of airplay with Arbitron listener data, for each week a track charted.

The Billboard Hot 100, Pop 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs categories reflect accumulated radio and sales points, based specifically on BDS and Nielsen SoundScan data, respectively. For the Hot 100, points from streamed music on AOL and Yahoo also shape the standings.

Hot Soundtrack Singles are the top-ranked Hot 100 songs in cases when the song's success can be directly traced to its inclusion on the soundtrack to a movie or TV show.

For the pop, country and R&B/hip-hop categories that combine data from album and singles charts, formulas have been weighted so that the sales units tallied on the Billboard 200, Top Country Albums and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, respectively, have parity with the specific chart points that construct each week's Billboard Hot 100, Hot Country Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.

The Dance Club Play rankings are based on an inverse point system, with titles collecting points based on rank for each week they were on the chart.

The publishing categories reflect accumulated points for all charted songs on the applicable weekly charts. If a song is held by more than one publisher, points are divided equally among those companies.

In the Publishing Corporation category, parent companies receive 100% of the points from publishers in which they own at least 50% equity and 25% of the points compiled by publishers that they administer but do not own.

Changes to note in the 2008 recaps:

o Accompanying label listings on the top artists rankings are limited to the label to which each artist is signed. An artist's title count will still include all charting efforts, even those recorded on other labels.

o On the song charts, titles on Virgin, Blue Note and Astralwerks are now part of the Capitol promotion label, while Capitol is the distributing label for Virgin titles on the album charts.

o As of July 1, EMI Music Marketing became the distributor of Welk Music Group labels, including Vanguard and Sugar Hill.

o Universal Latino is now known as Universal Music Latin Entertainment.

Romeo Reardon says:
Tuesday, December 30, 2008, 5:08:18 PM
“I have to disagree with the song listed #1 on Hot Dance Club Play Tracks... while Bob Sinclair and Erin Hamilton are both worthy of being #1, Madonna (4 Minutes) and Donna Summer (Stamp Your Feet) were the only 2 songs on this chart for the year to hit #1 twice (not to mention in consecutive weeks, respectively).

As a DJ, I have even had the Madonna and Donna Summer songs requested more often than any other song on the chart. Not once has anyone requested the Bob Sinclair song. I had requests for Erin Hamilton, but to the amount of Madonna and Donna.

The chart here is stated to based on statistics, but I think Billboard missed the mark on this one.
