Perry's 'Dream' Persists Atop Hot 100, But Mars Is on the Horizon

Katy Perry holds at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a second week with "Teenage Dream." While airplay for the track continues to grow (5-4 on Radio Songs, up 9%), downloads trail off by 11% to 197,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan, knocking the title 1-2 on Digital Songs.

Taking the place of "Teenage Dream" atop the digital tally is Bruno Mars with his debut solo single "Just the Way You Are," which moves 209,000 downloads (up 19%) and is the week's top Digital Gainer. It's the first time Mars has been No. 1 on the Digital Songs chart as a lead artist. He previously guested on B.o.B's chart-topper "Nothin' on You," which led for two weeks in May.

"Just the Way You Are" improves 4-3 on the Hot 100 and is in prime contention for the top spot next week, as it also nabs the Airplay Gainer tag with an increase of 16 million listener impressions (to 91.2 million), according to Nielsen BDS.

Also in contention for the No. 1 slot on next week's Hot 100 is Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)," which debuts at No. 75. The track hit digital retailers on Sept. 13 and will assuredly move into the top five of the chart with first-week download sales expected to be near 200,000. A sum significantly north of that could push the track to the top. Rihanna's Hot 100 debut comes from strong out-of-the-box airplay, as it enters Radio Songs at No. 42 -- her best-ever start on that list -- with 30 million listener impressions.

Back to the Hot 100 top 10, Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie," featuring Rihanna, holds at No. 2 a week after abdicating the top spot. Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" slips 3-4, and "I Like It" by Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull holds at No. 5.

"DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" by Usher featuring Pitbull remains at No. 6, one spot ahead of Nelly's "Just a Dream," which improves 9-7. Ke$ha's "Take It Off" is stationary at No. 8.

Flo Rida claims his fifth top 10 in less than three years, and first since "Sugar" in May 2009, as "Club Can't Handle Me," featuring David Guetta, jumps 13-9. Producer Guetta, in his first turn as a featured artist, scores his second top 10 as a listed performer. He reached No. 5 this past February with his Akon-voiced single, "Sexy Chick." Rounding out the top 10 is Taylor Swift's "Mine," which dips 7-10.

Selena Gomez & the Scene claims the Hot Shot Debut, coming in at No. 35 with "A Year with No Rain," the title single and first release from the act's second studio album, due Sept. 21. "Rain" starts with 69,000 downloads and is the third straight entry by the group, led by Disney Channel star Gomez, to debut in the top 40 this year following "Naturally" (No. 39) and "Round & Round" (No. 24).

Rapper Waka Flocka Flame starts at No. 45 with "No Hands," immediately bypassing the peak position of his only other chart effort from earlier this year "O Let's Do It" (No. 62). His new song, which features Roscoe Dash & Wale," starts at No. 21 on Digital Songs with 53,000 downloads.

Other notable debuts include the pairing of will.i.am and Nicki Minaj at No. 78 with "Check It Out" and Sean Kingston at No. 84 with "Dumb Love," which samples the Dell-Vikings' No. 4 hit from 1957, "Come Go With Me."

Nick Jonas, who has charted as part of the Jonas Brothers and earlier this year with the band Nick Jonas & The Administration, enters with a solo credit at No. 92 with "Introducing Me" from the "Camp Rock 2" Disney Channel movie soundtrack.

Florence + the Machine makes its first Hot 100 appearance as "Dog Days Are Over" debuts at No. 93 due to a download spike (27,000, up 276%) caused by the MTV Video Music Awards. The act was nominated for a number of moon man trophies for the song's video and played the tune on Sunday night's (Sept. 12) telecast.

Because the VMAs took place on a Sunday night, and since SoundScan's sales tracking week ends at the close of business on Sunday each week, the show's impact on the Hot 100 and Digital Songs is a bit muted this week, but should be much more notable on our next ranking.
