*THIS CHART IS ONLY A PORTION (TOP 30) OF A TOP 50 CHART.
HENCE songs are not deemed to have fallen off the charts UNTIL they are
OUTSIDE/BELOW the top 50 and NOT the top 30 broadcasted on air. This IS
reflected in the year end 'jamz' and explains partially why songs peaking
significantly lower than others may still finish ahead of them on the
year-end charts.

Bruno Mars Stays Atop Hot 100, 'Glee' Premieres with Five Tracks

by Silvio Pietroluongo, N.Y. | September 30, 2010 11:04 EDT

Bruno Mars (top), "Glee" cast

Bruno Mars likes things just the way they are atop the Billboard Hot 100, as "Just The Way You Are" holds at No. 1 on the chart for a second week. The song also returns to the penthouse of Digital Songs (188,000, down 3%, according to Nielsen SoundScan), after being pushed down a spot last week by Rihanna's No. 1 debuting "Only Girl (In the World)."

Rihanna's track drops 1-3 on Digital Songs and a steeper 3-8 on the Hot 100, as a second-week sales decline (161,000, down 35%) negates a 27% spike in airplay, according to Nielsen BDS. On Radio Songs, "Only Girl (In the World)" rises 18-16. The track will undoubtedly rebound in the next week or so as download sales stabilize. Rihanna's collaboration with Eminem, "Love the Way You Lie," descends 2-3.

Bruno Mars Lands Atop Hot 100, Rihanna Roars Into Top 10

After dropping 1-4 on the Hot 100 last week, Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" rebounds to No. 2. Moving up one spot each are "DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love" by Usher featuring Pitbull (5-4) and Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" (6-5).

At No. 6, appropriately enough, is "Like a G6," by Far*East Movement featuring Cataracs & Dev. The song climbs four rungs while claiming both the Airplay Gainer and Digital Gainer awards. It also flies 7-2 on Digital Songs (180,000, up 31%) and 20-13 on Radio Songs (58.5 million listener impressions, up 41%).

Cali's Far*East Movement Rockets Up Hot 100

Nelly's "Just a Dream" improves 8-7, while the beat-pumping "I Like It," by Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull (7-9), and "Club Can't Handle Me," by Flo Rida featuring David Guetta (9-10), move closer to the top 10 precipice.

The Glee Cast returns to the Hot 100 for another season of melodic remakes and high debuts -- five, to be exact. After the series won its timeslot with its second-season premiere on Sept. 21 (13.3 million viewers age 18-49, according to Nielsen), the cast shifts 409,000 total downloads of the songs made available from the episode, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's up 53% from the 267,000 sold for the handful of tracks released following the first season's second-half premiere in May.

'Glee' Returns with Huge Ratings Win

The Glee Cast's rendition of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind" is the Hot Shot Debut at No. 21, followed in order by "Telephone" (No. 23), "Billionaire" (No. 28), "Listen" (No. 38) and "What I Did for Love" (No. 51).

"Empire State of Mind" (106,000) and "Telephone" (102,000) become the fifth and sixth Glee Cast tracks to surpass 100,000 downloads in a single week, following "Don't Stop Believin'" (177,000), "Jessie's Girl" (105,000), "Poker Face" (109,000) and "Total Eclipse of the Heart" (134,000).

The highest non-Glee debut belongs to Akon with "Angel" (No. 62). Also new to the chart are Jesse McCartney's "Shake" (No. 90), "Loving You No More" by Diddy-Dirty Money featuring Drake (No. 91), and Mike Posner's "Please Don't Go" (No. 94).

The arrival of Maroon 5's "Hands All Over" at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and the accompanying promotion surrounding the release, propel lead single "Misery" to a new Hot 100 peak (No. 14) and weekly sales high (71,000). In addition, album cut "Stutter" debuts at No. 84 (31,000).

Eminem, Lady Antebellum Expected to Lead 2011 Grammy Nominations

by Cortney Harding, N.Y. | October 01, 2010 12:08 EDT

The nominees for the 53rd annual Grammy Awards won't officially be revealed until Dec. 1. But with the eligibility period having closed on Sept. 30, the contenders are now clear, with early favorites and intriguing storylines already emerging.

According to our survey of record executives and industry observers, the 2011 Grammys will likely field its strongest and most competitive collection of record and song of the year nominees in recent memory. While this may lead to a Grammy night filled with memorable, over-the-top performances, it's bittersweet news for the industry, as it mirrors the shift in the marketplace away from albums and toward the less profitable commodity of singles.

Many experts project Eminem as this year's potential across-the-board winner, as his album sales remained strong in 2010. Here's a preview of possible nominees in the four main categories:

SONG AND RECORD OF THE YEAR

Nearly everyone surveyed agreed this was a superb year for singles, especially for pop. There was also consensus that four songs would face off on Feb. 13, 2011, for song and record of the year: Eminem and Rihanna's collaboration, "Love the Way You Lie"; Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now"; Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind" and Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance." "These are all formidable singles," says Warner Bros. senior VP of digital Jack Isquith, who hailed them as "meaty, impressive, career-defining records."

Other top tracks cited by multiple executives include Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" (eligible for record of the year but not for song), Katy Perry's "California Gurls," Usher's "OMG," Sade's "Soldier of Love," B.o.B's "Airplanes" and Florence & the Machine's "Dog Days Are Over."

Last year, Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" won song of the year while Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" took the record prize.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR

In the album of the year category, Eminem's "Recovery" is the clear favorite in a subpar field. "This is Eminem's year," says Billy Mann, who co-wrote and produced last year's showstopping Pink hit, "Glitter in the Air." "He brought his best game and then some. The public can feel it, and the industry can feel it." To date, "Recovery" has sold 2.7 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Los Angeles Times chief pop critic Ann Powers says Eminem's comeback story, as well as the fact that his album was both commercially successful and critically acclaimed, will resonate with Grammy voters. "He's a major figure in pop history," she says, "and he seems to have really grown into himself."

Another leading contender is the Carole King/James Taylor album "Live at the Troubadour." While live sets traditionally fare poorly with voters (1994's "MTV Unplugged: Tony Bennett" is the last in-concert title to win the category), "I would watch out for that record," Glassnote Records head Daniel Glass says. The album has sold 453,000 copies since its May release.

Other albums cited include Sade's "Soldier of Love," Jay-Z's "The Blueprint 3," Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now," Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs," Usher's "Raymond v. Raymond" and two from recent Grammy winners: Herbie Hancock's "The Imagine Project" and Robert Plant's "Band of Joy."

Powers thinks Sade's album is a strong bet. "It's a gold-plated release," she says. "It sold well [1.3 million copies], it was well-received critically, and she's a classy artist."

Last year, Taylor Swift took home the statue for "Fearless."

BEST NEW ARTIST

Two breakout acts, B.o.B and Mumford & Sons, were mentioned on multiple occasions as strong contenders for best new artist, but most believe it'll be a battle between Drake and Justin Bieber, with Drake taking the award.

Emerging stars Nicki Minaj and Bruno Mars are ineligible for nomination this year, as their album release dates fall outside of the eligibility period (Sept. 1, 2009-Sept. 30, 2010); in Mars' case, by one week. Other possible nominees this year include Florence & the Machine, who got a big boost out of their MTV Video Music Awards appearance, and reality TV superstars Susan Boyle and Adam Lambert.

Despite the success of Swift and the Zac Brown Band at last year's ceremony, many country observers say this year's crop of new artists is unlikely to garner many nods. Luke Bryan and Chris Young were both mentioned as long shots.

Grammy voters didn't suffer from a lack of options when it came to nominees; according to Recording Academy president Neil Portnow, the academy received almost 20,000 submissions this year, a new record.

The nominees will be announced Dec. 1 during the third annual "GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live!!: Countdown to Music's Biggest Night" concert. The ceremony will air on CBS on Feb. 13, 2011.

Additional reporting by Ed Christman, Ann Donahue and Craig Marks.

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber Nearing 1 Billion YouTube Views

by Glenn Peoples | October 04, 2010 4:20 EDT

Rachel Been
Pamela Littky

Lady Gaga (top), Justin Bieber

Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber are both approaching a major milestone of the new music industry: one billion all-time YouTube views.

Lady Gaga should pass one billion views around Oct. 20 if she continues on her current pace, according to David Birch, communications director at TubeMogul. During September, she averaged almost 1.8 million views per day.

Birch says Bieber will surpass the 1 billion views milestone around Nov. 1 if he keeps up his current pace. During September, Bieber's videos were viewed about 3.7 million times per day.

After Lady Gaga and Bieber, the next closest artist is Michael Jackson at around 600 million views, says Birch.

Even though Lady Gaga will be the first to the one billion mark, TubeMogul data shows that lately Bieber has been the hotter of the two and has been YouTube's most-viewed music artist. From July 1 to Sept. 28, according to TubeMogul data supplied to Billboard, Bieber averaged 3.98 million daily views to Lady Gaga's 2.04 million views per day.

Lady Gaga & Justin Bieber YouTube Views

Justin Bieber's "Baby" Is Most-Watched YouTube Video

Bieber has been hot since winter. Since Feb. 28, Bieber has averaged 3.83 million daily views while Lady Gaga has averaged 2.53 million. To put their numbers in perspective, Kanye West has averaged 271,000 daily views in that time period.

But what really stands out is the consistent performance of Bieber's videos. In April, TubeMogul began "Most Viral Videos of the Month" to highlight the most-viewed videos -- including unofficial versions -- in a given month. Nearly nine in ten of all videos to make the list have been music videos, and Justin Bieber has been the one constant month after month. He had four of the top ten videos of the month from April through August.

Both artists have many of YouTube's all-time most-viewed videos. Bieber's "Baby" is YouTube's most-watched video of all time with 345 million views. His "Never Let You Go" is #22 with 92 million views while "Never Say Never" is #28 with 86 million views. He's also at #34 and #40.

Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" is #2 all-time at YouTube with 288 million views. "Just Dance" is at #11 with 123 million views, "Alejandro" is #26 with 87 million views and "Telephone" is #31 with 85 million views.

YouTube views include videos in the Vevo network but not Vevo videos viewed at Vevo.com. Vevo CEO Rio Caraeff has stated that YouTube accounts for about 90% of Vevo's views. Videos by both Bieber and Lady Gaga are showed on Vevo.

Dipset's Cam'ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana and Freekey Zekey also reunited at this year's show for the first time since reconciling this past summer. The foursome performed their latest "Salute."

B.o.B with next single, "Don't Let Me Fall," Big Boi featuring Yelawolf, Soulja Boy, J. Cole, Cali Swag District with Digital Underground, Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame were among the other performers.

And following suit from last year's series of ciphers, this year's show featured seven ciphers, including father/son pairings between Ice Cube and his two sons and Reverend Run with boys Diggy and Jojo Simmons, and the Rosewood cipher with Kanye West and his G.O.O.D.
